Surplusmarkt.
surplusmarkt.nlSurplusmarkt was created out of frustration with Marktplaats.
The idea is to build a marketplace environment where people interested in militaria can safely sell their items. In addition to militaria, it should also become a place for sport shooters and collectors.
Visual identity.
First we looked at what best fits the target audience. Naturally that’s green, but the app also needs to feel personal. Therefore we added navy and “black‑ops” colours – navy blue and black‑ops for a dark‑mode green.
The logo must appeal to every user, so we recommended a bullet, rifle and dagger. In addition to recognisable icons we used the Defence ribbon, which is instantly recognisable as something military.
These icons represent:
- Bullet: The ammunition collectors (e.g., NVBMB)
- Rifle: The sport shooter and weapons collector
- Dagger: The militaria fan / collector
The app.
After the visual identity was approved by the client, we developed the app.
The app works on the same basis as a typical marketplace: you log in and post your advertisement.
Because it isn’t a simple butter‑package, every advertisement must be reviewed by an admin. Users can also report advertisements. Additionally, each advertisement indicates whether it is subject to a disposal‑duty.
The user must be able to manage their account. Anything the user has ever entered or published must be editable or deletable.
This has resulted in a complete system that runs both as an app and a website.
Marketing.
Marketing is as important as the product itself. To ensure that all collectors start using the app, a flyer was created and distributed at the first militaria fair in Houten.
The flyer briefly shows what the app is and that there is now a better, shared place for collectors.
